building a collection

21Mar09

My lovelies have many painted shirts.  The collection has been building as I find blank shirts at thrift shops and in piles of hand-me-downs.   We save them up and paint party-style when inspiration hits.  Party-style:

I blogged about this last year, on my old blog.  For those of you who missed it, this is how to do it:

  • Cut stencils from freezer paper (we buy Reynolds brand, found in the Saran wrap section of the grocery store).  Your picture can be drawn freehand or traced from Clip Art or some great picture found in a book or on a CD cover.  It helps to use an exacto knife for the cutting
  • Iron the stencil onto a clean blank shirt
  • Paint (we use silkscreen paint from the art store.  The colours are much bolder than the ‘fabric paint’ often found in craft/dollar/sewing stores)
  • Allow paint to dry
  • Remove stencil
  • Heat-set the image with the iron (according to instructions on the paint container)
