a fence and a dress
A dear friend of mine got married a couple of weeks ago. She is a wonderfully supportive and creative kind of girl, marrying an equally supportive and creative kind of guy. They were married in a beautiful venue surrounded by a zillion mutual friends. Of course, I had to make something to wear to this wedding. Being a chaotic sort of summer, I didn’t get myself together until about a week before the wedding. I started to make a drapey thing out of stretch cotton… without a pattern. This ended up looking like a slutty toga, so I trashed it and pulled a back-up dress out of my closet.
The day before the wedding I decided that the back-up dress just wouldn’t cut it. I was running an errand at Canadian Tire with the kids and decided to nip in to HomeSense next door. I bought a pale gray queen sheet set. I sewed like mad, using this Japanese pattern book and a few ideas of my own. The top was made out of the pillow case. The bottom, from the flat sheet.
It worked rather well, for a day-before sort of effort. I still need to sew in a zipper and stiffen-up the obi with some interfacing. The obi is so lovely and comfortable to wear. That, and my red Swedish clogs make me happy… sigh… I have to keep sewing and wearing clogs.
Oh, and AZ made this perfect fence over the weekend. It represents the beginning of our effort to claim our yard. Now we can plant trees and hedges and more food. Funny – this yard is twice the size of our old yard, but our kids still complain about how they miss our old backyard… because the new yard is so odd, there is no obvious place to play. We’re working on it (read: I’m obsessing about it). The final plan is awesome, it’s just going to take time and cash. Like everything right? Time and cash :)
