watering hole

The trick is to get there early and find a spot as high upstream as possible. This place is about ten minutes from our house.

It is pretty great. This section of the river has a small town running up beside it, with little restaurants and tiendas selling empanadas, deep fried plantains with cheese, and streetside-made taffy (slapped against a wooden post and served-up in an ice-creamless cone).

Lower down, closer to Cali, is a large park packed with people. Many families settle-in for the day, cooking up giant pots of sancocho (soup) over small campfires. The river is packed solid.

And the best part of all?

… there is a superfabulous 6km loop trail! At the moment, I am still running on and around Cañas Gordas, but once I have my drivers licence, I think this spot will work well.
